Diabetes Business Impact
Type 2 diabetes is a hidden epidemic impacting 1 in 12 people in the working population - this equates to 254,200 people working in the construction industry who live with diabetes, of which 57,195 don't even know they have the condition.
This year's Stop. Make a Change campaign will be highlighting the impact of diabetes in the workplace, along with providing key statistics and information on how you can protect your workforce from the risks diabetes can pose.
Recognising the significant impact that type 2 diabetes is having on our industry, CECA are committed to raising awareness and helping to implement preventive measures. Diabetes can affect concentration and reaction times, posing serious risks on construction sites where precision and alertness are crucial. Apart from the potentially catastrophic affect this disease can have on individuals, the financial consequences to individuals and industry as a whole can be huge. It is estimated that the current loss of productivity across industry could be as high as £4 - £5bn.
By promoting awareness on diabetes safety, healthy lifestyle choices, regular health screenings, and providing education on managing diabetes, we aim to mitigate incidents and accidents. Together, we can ensure a safer working environment and protect our team members from potential harm or worse outcomes.

Managing diabetes in the workplace through reasonable adjustments can include:
- Provision for testing, which is essential for the management of diabetes, in a private and hygienic area
- Awareness-raising to ensure that all employees know the symptoms of hypoglycaemia and how to help a colleague in this situation
- Encouraging communication with employees around self-care, prevention, disease management and treatment
- Individual assessments for people with diabetes; some safety-critical jobs may have requirements that are difficult to meet for someone with diabetes, but diabetics should not face a blanket exclusion
- Regular eye tests to ensure that all employees are fit to perform their duties
- Recognition that diabetes may affect the emotional wellbeing of an individual (also that stress can affect blood sugar control), and the provision of support when needed, through a doctor or a counsellor
- Implementing health initiatives - although many factors lead to the development of diabetes, the major controllable risk factors are body weight and physical activity. Understanding the profile of your workforce can help you design a holistic approach to health and wellness.
