Mates in Mind is a leading UK charity which enables organisations of any size, to proactively improve the mental wellbeing of their workforce. They do this by providing the skills, clarity and confidence to businesses on how to raise awareness, improve understanding, implement effective interventions and end the stigma of mental ill-health. As a result, they help organisations to build positive mental health in and through work.

Although mental ill-health is a pervasive challenge across all UK workplaces, research shows that construction is a higher-risk sector in terms of mental ill-health and suicide.

In 2025, a CIOB report found that construction workers reported that they often (daily or weekly) experienced stress (58%); anxiety (50%); depression (21%) and fatigue (52%). Worryingly 28% had experienced suicidal thoughts at least once in the past year.

The human costs of mental health in construction must not be ignored, with suicide rates amongst construction workers 3.7 times higher than the national average.

Since Mates in Mind’s launch in 2017, the charity’s work has been rooted in improving mental health across the construction industry and related sectors. This translates to over 700 Mates in Mind Supporter organisations reached, thousands of days of training delivered and countless industry events attended to open up the conversation about mental health in the construction sector.
